Lane Cardiovascular Center performed its 10,000th heart procedure on September 6, 2015.
Virginia Bozeman, a resident of Zachary, was brought to Lane’s ER after she passed out at home. Ms. Bozeman had previously experienced a few “fainting spells” but this time she was too weak to get up on her own. Mrs. Bozeman was quickly diagnosed with bradycardia, a condition in which the heart beats too slowly, and a pacemaker was recommended.
A pacemaker is a small device that is implanted under the skin, most often below the collarbone. The pacemaker continuously monitors your heart, and if it detects a slow heart rate, it sends out small undetectable electrical signals to correct it. Drs. Mrugesh Soni and Charles Thompson, interventional cardiologists with Cardiovascular Institute of the South, performed the procedure.
“I feel so much better,” said Ms. Bozeman after the procedure. “I didn’t even realize I felt so bad before. I have more energy now and I am able to do things I enjoy again.” Ms. Bozeman said she is very thankful for the staff of Lane Cardiovascular Center and Cardiovascular Institute of the South.
Lane’s heart cath lab first opened in January 2007 in a t-building set up just outside the ER and moved into its new home, Lane Cardiovascular Center, in August 2008. The volume of heart cath procedures has increased so dramatically over the years that a second cath lab was completed in September 2015.
